WHAT YOU’LL LEARN & DO

Focus

You’ll start by getting input from key stakeholders about which journey(s) your initiative will focus on. Once you finalize your focus, you’ll create a project plan that outlines key tasks, dates, and deliverables.

Hypothesize

Soon after, you’ll bring together a group of cross-functional employees, leveraging their internal knowledge and surfacing assumptions to build out a hypothetical map of what you believe your customers or employees do, think, and feel as they work to accomplish a task or goal. In addition to surfacing organizational knowledge, this crucial step lays the groundwork for subsequent change initiatives that may impact various parts of the business.

Plan

You’ll use the outputs from the hypothesis mapping session as the starting point for planning customer or employee research, in which you’ll get the chance to validate (or, as we often find, invalidate) your hypotheses. You’ll choose one or more research methodologies, customize interview guides, and begin to manage the logistics inherent in conducting primary research.

Recruit

In this phase you’ll define a recruiting and compensation strategy — then conduct outreach and screening to ensure you’ve selected research participants who are conversational, collaborative, and fit your target profile.

Research

Your planning and preparation will culminate in the opportunity to test your hypotheses, uncover deep insights about customers’ or employees’ needs and expectations, and co-create ideas for improvement with your participants.

Analyze

Finally, you’ll analyze your research findings to create a set of visually compelling and easy-to-use maps that tell your customers’ or employees’ stories. Extensive guidance will help you determine the right information to include on your maps in order to create empathy and drive action within your organization. Once you’ve completed that, your maps are ready to share!
